Endorsement: Dan Kalb for District 1

KalbDan Kalb understands the linkage between transportation and environmental sustainability, has a strong track record of advocating for pedestrian/bicycle/transit improvements, and is committed to a fair and inclusive decision-making process. Transport Oakland is enthusiastic to endorse Dan Kalb for Oakland City Council District 1.

With a background in environmental and social justice policy and advocacy, Dan Kalb was elected to City Council in 2012 and represents Oakland on the Alameda County Transportation Commission. In his time on Council, he has been a leader on affordable housing, open government, and sustainable transportation issues.

Of particular importance to Transport Oakland’s platform, Kalb was instrumental to the successful formation of the Oakland Department of Transportation. He advocated for funding to ensure its formation during the biennial budget process. And he was a critical voice in demanding improvements to the first Transition Plan heard at Public Works Committee in January 2016, resulting in a better outcome with greater stakeholder and staff support.

Kalb has provided leadership to improve walking, cycling, and transit.  He introduced legislative changes in the Telegraph Complete Streets project approvals that laid the groundwork for a continuous bike lane along Telegraph Avenue through the Temescal. He has been a supporter of the East Bay Bus Rapid Transit project. And, while unsuccessful in swaying the outcome, Kalb supported the vision to convert Latham Square to a fully pedestrian-ized plaza.
